Malta Tourist Visa Application — route assessment

Plan your visit to Malta around your actual passport, residence and itinerary. Review visa, electronic authorisation or exemption eligibility, supporting evidence, costs and the application process before booking.

For a Malta itinerary, assess the common Schengen short-stay framework alongside the actual main destination and competent application office. Do not automatically apply through Malta just because a flight lands there. Check planned days in every Schengen state and any separate destinations outside the area.

Passport and residence: assess each traveller

Separate nationality, passport type and legal residence. An ordinary passport, special administrative region passport, BNO, travel permit and residence card can lead to different checks. Family members may hold different documents. A previous visa or a residence permit from another country matters only where the destination expressly recognises it.

Tourism, visiting family and other activities

Describe the real activities, travel dates and people funding the trip. Holidays, visiting relatives, a business meeting, paid work, study and long-term residence are not interchangeable purposes. If the visit has several purposes, disclose them before selecting the application route. Do not describe an intended job or relocation as a short holiday.

Planning your Malta itinerary

Build a dated itinerary showing arrival in Malta, nights in each location, accommodation, onward transport and the final departure. For a multi-country journey, record every connection and border crossing. The visit described in the form, bookings and supporting letter should agree, while leaving room for ordinary travel changes.

Core document checklist

Prepare the travel document, current residence evidence where relevant, application information, photographs if required, itinerary and accommodation or host details. Organise occupation, study or business evidence, genuine funding and relevant travel history. The receiving authority determines the final checklist and may ask for more information.

Employment, savings and sponsorship

Explain who pays and how the proposed budget relates to income or savings. Self-employed applicants can prepare business records; students or dependants should explain sponsorship and the relationship. An unexplained last-minute deposit is not a substitute for a coherent funding history. Do not invent employment, bookings or bank records.

Children and family applications

Review each traveller’s document and permission separately. Depending on the family circumstances and authority, birth, guardianship and travel consent evidence may be relevant. Explain a child travelling with one parent or another adult and keep names consistent. A parent’s approval does not automatically cover every child.

Destination-specific checks for Malta

The destination reference has sections concerning travel-health and vaccination records, dual nationality and travel documents, passport and travel documents. Use these as questions for your actual route and passport; the presence of a topic does not mean its rule applies to every visitor. Confirm current requirements with the competent destination authority.

Process, costs and tourist visa FAQ

Application process and PremierVisa services

01 · Review the trip

Review the passport, residence, destination, purpose, past refusals and intended dates. Identify whether a visa, authorisation, exemption check or another permission is the relevant next step.

02 · Confirm the receiving office

Identify the competent consulate, government portal or authorised centre for the applicant’s residence. A convenient appointment in another jurisdiction may not establish the right to apply there.

03 · Prepare consistent evidence

Create a case-specific checklist, reconcile dates and funding, and identify translations. The applicant reviews the final information; document support does not replace personal declarations or required attendance.

04 · Submit and track

Follow the official submission procedure and track appointments, payment receipts and genuine information requests. Biometrics or interviews apply only where required. An application reference is not a visa decision.

05 · Read the decision

Check the document number, name, validity, entries and conditions before travel. Follow the border decision and actual permitted stay. Reassess itinerary changes or a new passport where relevant.

Fees and timing

Separate government charges, authorised centre fees, service support, translation, insurance and travel spending. Quote the selected route and currency rather than a universal visa price. Check what is refundable if an appointment changes or a decision is negative. No processing estimate guarantees a passport return or departure date.

Malta tourist visa FAQ

Do I need a visa for Malta?

The answer depends on the exact passport, nationality, residence, purpose, stay and arrival method. Check the current destination rule for that combination. An exemption for another nationality is not proof of your eligibility.

Can I apply from Hong Kong, mainland China or Taiwan?

Check the competent office and its residence rules. A local address or a temporary visit alone may not establish eligibility to apply. Confirm jurisdiction before paying for travel or an appointment.

What is the difference between a visa and an electronic authorisation?

They are different permissions with their own eligibility and conditions. An eVisa is also distinct from a travel authorisation. Check the precise official product rather than assuming every online application is the same.

Can my family use one approval?

Review every traveller’s passport and route. A family submission or booking does not necessarily create a shared immigration permission. Check children, different nationalities and consent arrangements separately.

Do I need to buy flights before applying?

Follow the actual evidence rules and consider cancellation terms before paying. An itinerary or requested reservation should be genuine, but a booking does not guarantee approval. Do not make unnecessary non-refundable commitments based on an estimate.

What if I am self-employed, retired or a student?

Explain the real circumstances and funding with suitable evidence. Lack of salaried employment is not a reason to invent a job. The authority assesses the complete case and purpose under its rules.

Must a previous refusal be disclosed?

Answer the actual application questions truthfully and review the refusal reasons. Explain relevant changes with evidence. Using a new passport does not remove the obligation to answer questions accurately.

Does a visitor visa permit work?

Do not assume employment, paid services or long-term residence is permitted. Match each planned activity to the actual permission. If work is intended, request a separate assessment before travel.

Are approval and a particular stay guaranteed?

No. Issuing authorities and border officers retain their decision-making roles. Check the actual permission and admission conditions. Adviser assistance cannot promise approval, entry or a longer stay.

What should I send for an initial enquiry?

Send passport type and nationality, current residence, destination, purpose, intended dates, family size and any relevant refusal summary. Detailed identity and financial records should follow an agreed secure channel after the scope is confirmed.

UK government cross-reference — passport scope applies

The UK government reference is primarily written for British citizen passport holders. Its nationality-specific exemptions and stay periods are not applied here to other passports. The references and service preparation were reviewed on 18 October 2026; check current destination requirements before filing.
